Michael Colreavy TD welcomes funding for WestWave Project

9 July, 2014 - by Michael Colreavy TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Michael Colreavy TD, has welcomed the awarding of funding from the European Commission to the ESB’s WestWave project.

Speaking on the issue, Deputy Colreavy said:

“It is very encouraging to see that the WestWave project has been awarded €23 million from the European Commission.

“Ireland has massive potential to develop renewable energy off its shoreline.

“Ireland contains a massive shoreline, with serious potential to develop renewable energy facilities along the coast.

“It is important that there is a mix of renewable energy feeding into the Irish grid, and that there is a diversification away from solely developing wind energy.

“If wave energy can be harnessed, for an island nation like Ireland it could hold a massive potential source of energy.

“It is also welcoming to see that it is the ESB, a semi-state body that is leading the way in innovative renewable energy projects.”
