McKay challenges Orange Order over bonfires
Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said the Orange Order needs to address the burning of flags and election posters on loyalist bonfires.
Speaking after the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland called on bonfire organisers not to accept tyres, Mr McKay said;
"This call from the Orange Order completely misses the point.
"It makes no reference whatsoever to the burning of flags, election posters or holy statues on bonfires.
"These are hate crimes and are being treated as such by the PSNI.
"The Order Order claims that bonfires are an important part of protestant culture and should be welcoming to families.
"How are these displays of naked sectarianism welcoming to anyone?
"While the burning of tyres is undoubtedly wrong and causes significant environmental problems, the Orange Order should also be addressing the wider issues around bonfires instead of ignoring them.
"If the Orange Order wants to address bonfires they need to come out and explain their position on these hate crimes."
