DUP adopting blinkered approach - Ruane

9 July, 2014 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has said the DUP cannot be blinkered in their condemnation of violence.

Speaking after comments by the DUP's Nigel Dodd's at Westminster, the South Down MLA said;

"Nigel Dodds has said threats of republican violence must be faced down but the irony of his remarks seems to be lost on him.

"Condemnation of racist and sectarian attacks carried out in East Belfast had to be dragged from his party.

"Last week, just hours after the DUP walked out of all-party talks and issued a joint statement with the representatives of loyalist paramilitary groups there was a gun attack on a car in Clough, County Down. The the police are treating that gun attack as a sectarian hate crime.

"We have also seen 12 months of illegal protests, road blocks, violence and intimidation from those opposed to the lawful determination of the Parades' Commission.

"If the DUP is serious about facing down threats of violence then they must state clearly that they are opposed to intimidation and threats no matter what the source.”
