Ruane condemns attack on Kilkeel Catholic church

10 July, 2014 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has condemned an attack on a Catholic church in Kilkeel.

Speaking after statues and pews at Our Lady of the Angels oratory were damaged, the South Down MLA said;

"This disgraceful attack on Our Lady of the Angels oratory must be condemned.

"Statues, pews and windows were broken and the church desecrated in what is believed to have been a sectarian attack.

"This comes just days after a sectarian gun attack on a car in Clough and ongoing intimidation and harassment in the area.

"There can be no place for sectarianism in this community. I would call on representatives from all parties to come out and condemn this to show those responsible they have no support.

"I will be raising this attack with the Chief Constable and calling on the PSNI to carry out a thorough investigation."

Local councillor Sean Doran said; "This attack has called shock and anger in the local community.

"Hopefully this will not lead to a raising of community tensions in Kilkeel."
