Second photographer assaulted at Orange Order march - JJ Magee

12 July, 2014

Sinn Féin Councillor JJ Magee has said that a photographer was assaulted at the Orange Order march going past St Patrick Church in Belfast this morning.

Speaking today the North Belfast councillor said:

“The assault happened as the photographer stood with other media photographers and journalists who were covering the Orange Order march passing St Patrick’s Church.

“As the camera man was taking pictures an Orangeman in the parade reached out and pushed the camera forcefully into the photographer’s face.

“The incident was immediately reported to the PSNI who were at the scene of the assault.

“This is the second assault in as many weeks of photographers at Orange Order marches.

“A fortnight ago another photographer was pushed to the ground at Workman’s Avenue on the Springfield Road by a number of Orangemen.

“Unfortunately this assault stands along with numerous breaches of the Parades Commission determination passing St Patrick Church.

“The Orange Order must take responsibility for its members and the bands that it hires for marches.”
