Ó Clochartaigh calls on international community to act to end Israeli assault on Gaza

16 July, 2014 - by Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Speaking today during Order of Business in the Seanad, Sinn Fein Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said called on the international community to act immediately in order to end the Israeli assault on Gaza.

He said:

“As the Israeli assault on Gaza continues into its 9th day the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating minute by minute. 80 % of those killed in Gaza have been civilians. Israel’s indiscriminate targeting and bombing is the cause of these tragedies. The main reason for continued attacks is the international community’s silence and the impunity given to Israel for these crimes. There is absolutely no accountability for the atrocities which are being reported every day now. 196 civilians are now being reported as dead.

“Sinn Féin calls upon the international community to act immediately to stop these crimes. We call on the High Contracting Parties of the Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfil their obligation under Article 1 of the Convention to ensure that it is respected at all times. We ask that they fulfil their responsibilities under Article 146 to pursue perpetrators of serious violations of the Convention. This is determined under Article 147, which lists violations of the Convention amounting to war crimes.

“We also call for the establishment of a UN fact-finding mission to investigate suspected war crimes committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, and to take necessary steps to prosecute those responsible for them.”
