Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed his shock at the death of 13 year old Gareth McGuirk who drowned on Thursday in a reservoir near Drogheda.
The Sinn Féin leader also extended his “deepest sympathies and solidarity with Gareth’s family and friends.”
Mr. Adams said:
“I want to extend my sincere and deepest sympathy and solidarity to the family and friends of 13 year old Gareth McGuirk. His death is a huge tragedy and loss for them and is a shock for the entire community in Drogheda.
I want to commend the actions of the emergency services who rushed to the scene. They do a remarkable job and deserve our fullest support.
There is also an onus on agencies responsible for reservoirs, lakes and other water resoucres to ensure that they have the maximum security and where appropriate that life-buoys are available in the event of an emergency.
I would appeal to anyone thinking of going for a swim to try and ensure that they only do so in areas which have lifeguards. Last year 91 citizens died as a result of drowning accidents.
In the very good weather the risk of more such accidents increases. I would urge everyone to take great care.”
