Threat to Cherry Orchard Hospital must be lifted- Cllr. Daithi Doolan

8 August, 2014

Sinn Fein's Ballyfermot City Council, Daithi Doolan, has strongly condemned the HSE, "for imposing jobs cuts in Cherry Orchard Hospital."

Doolan said:

"The HSE plan to cut 62 jobs in Cherry Orchard Hospital. The current skill mix in the hospital is 50% nurses 50% carers. The HSE want to reduce the nursing numbers to save money and have in the future 60% carers and 40% nurses but also at reduced levels for both. These cuts are short-sighted and affect those who need the service the most.

"This will be a massive blow to the hospital. It will have a terrible effect on services to the public in particular services for senior citizens.

"This is a downgrading of the hospital and could be the first step in its closure.

"I am appealing to the HSE to reverse these cuts. But if they do not listen then it is important that local TDs and councillors work together to keep our local hospital fully staffed and fully functioning."
