McCann calls for clerical abuse inquiry

8 August, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has reiterated her call for an inquiry into clerical sex abuse in the North.

Speaking after a meeting with Michael Connolly from Clerical Abuse NI and other victims of clerical  abuse alongside West Belfast MP Paul Maskey, Jennifer McCann said;

"There are a number of victims and survivors of clerical abuse who are excluded from the current Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry.

"It is important that all victims of abuse have the right to truth, acknowledgment, justice and redress.

"Sinn Féin has supported the call from victims and survivors of clerical abuse for an inquiry and I want to re-iterate our support for that again.

"There is a clear need for a mechanism to be put in place where all victims of clerical abuse can come forward with confidence and security to tell their story.

"We also need to ensure the proper support services are in place for victims and survivors."
