Council must tackle legal highs in Larne - McMullan

21 August, 2014 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has called for action on 'legal highs' in Larne.

"Ever since Belfast City Council cracked down on shops selling legal highs, young people from Belfast have been travelling by public transport to Larne to buy these substances.

"There has been a marked increase in this recently with reports that young people are coming to Larne on buses with rucksacks and stocking up on legal highs.

"These are dangerous substances and this situation cannot be allowed to continue.

"I am calling on Larne Council to take similar steps to Belfast City Council in tackling shops selling legal highs.

"Officials in Larne should be talking to their counterparts in Belfast to find out what was done there.

"East Antrim Sinn Féin councillor James McKeown will be raising this at council level in order to have this dealt with to protect our young people."
