Gerry Adams TD welcomes decision by Greek Government to hold a referendum on Austerity

27 June, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Gerry Adams TD, President of Sinn Féin, has welcomed the decision by the Greek government to hold an referendum on the austerity measures that some member states of the EU are seeking to impose on the Greek people.

Gerry Adams TD said,

“EU elites are seeking to impose further austerity on the Greek people. This is wrong, economically counterproductive and undemocratic. I welcome the decision of the Greek Government to put these issue to the people in a referendum.

“This week the Taoiseach has misrepresented the actions of his government and claimed there has been no increased taxes, ignoring the imposition of property tax, water charges and other changes.

“Neither this government or the previous Fianna Fáil-led administration had a mandate to impose cuts or unfair taxes. They did so at the behest of EU elites

“The opposition of Fine Gael and Labour to a debt write down, condemns generations of Irish people to pay for the greed of a small golden circle. It stands in contrast to their approach to debt write downs for wealthy investors, for the developers and the bankers.”
