European Parliament to hear presentation on The Economics of Irish Unity
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy will this week, Wednesday, host a seminar in the European Parliament during which London based economist Michael Burke will present his recent paper "The Economic Case for Irish Unity".
Speaking ahead of the seminar, Carthy, who is the head of Sinn Féin United Ireland project team, said:
"Sinn Féin believes in a United Ireland and we recognise what a single all-Ireland economy could deliver in terms of greater prosperity and growth across the island. Papers such as the one Michael Burke has recently published have reinforced our arguments.
“While opponents often claim that we cannot afford a United Ireland, the reality is that we cannot afford to be partitioned. The human price of partition is too high to pay.
"Duplication of health, education, welfare, transport, and agriculture dearly costs each citizen on the island.
“Economist Michael Burke has presented his paper on the "Economic Case for Irish Unity" to numerous different forums and I am delighted that he has agreed to present it to a seminar in the European Parliament.
"Michael Burke is on the record of stating: 'from a purely economic perspective, I would say that if people want to change their living standards for the better, the best way of doing that would be to get rid of the Border and reunify the country.'
"I am looking forward to welcoming Mr Burke to the European Parliament and ensuring that the strong economic case for ending partition to be heard by representatives from all across Europe."
Note: Michael Burke will present his paper to the European Parliament on Wednesday 9th December at 6.30pm Brussels time. For further info contact [email protected]
