Tesco must engage with MANDATE Union- Louise O’Reilly

28 January, 2016 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Sinn Féin candidate for Dublin Fingal Louise O’ Reilly has commented on media reports that Tesco plan to dramatically slash the terms, conditions and pay of long serving staff.

Speaking today O’Reilly said:

Reports like this highlight the problem of casual ideation of workers.  Sinn Féin is calling on the company to immediately engage with the Mandate Trade Union.

The new contracts on offer represent a retrograde step for workers with more than 20 years’ service and it is very telling that these contracts are not being considered for management with similar service.

This government has had five years to deal with problems of casualisation and precarious work and the fact that Tesco is even proposing these contracts demonstrates the need for more than commissions and reports.  Government inaction on workers’ rights means that this company sees no reason not to offer these contracts.”
