Cowen back tracks on water promise – Nolan

9 March, 2016 - by Carol Nolan TD

Sinn Féin TD for Offaly, Carol Nolan, has criticised Barry Cowen’s U-turn on water charges. Barry Cowen had insisted that water charges were a red line issue. Now the Fianna Fáil TD seems to be flip-flopping on the issue.

Deputy Nolan said:

“Up until this week, Barry Cowen had been insisting that water charges were a red line issue for Fianna Fáil. However we are now seeing a complete reversal of that position. It is obvious that he has been given orders by Micheál Martin to change his tune and now he’s dancing all over the issue – refusing to confirm or deny water charges as a red line issue.

“It seems that Fianna Fáil are about to perform their first U-turn since the election campaign and will scrap their commitment to halt the water charges if they go to bed with Fine Gael.

“This is yet another broken promise from a party, who were categorically and vehemently opposed to entertaining a coalition with Fine Gael.

“The majority of the people voted against water charges in this general election campaign. They are a red line issue for the majority of citizens in this state and must be stopped – Fianna Fáil cannot back track on their promises to halt the charges now.”
