Elective surgery cancellations at Tullamore Hospital must be resolved – Nolan

6 April, 2016

Offaly Sinn Féin TD, Carol Nolan, has described the current Accident and Emergency trolley situation as totally unacceptable saying that the cancellation of elective surgery procedures at the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore was also connected to the trolley crisis in the hospital system.

Deputy Nolan said:

“The trolley situation in hospitals around the country is heart breaking and it needs to be remedied as soon as possible. But an almost unspoken fallout from the trolley crisis is the cancellation of life changing operations. Only last week I was contacted by an elderly patient who had their surgery cancelled at the last minute for a third time. This is completely unfair and unacceptable.

“The ‘Trolley Watch’ figures provided by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) regularly highlight the impact of decades of failure to adequately provide for the sick and the vulnerable in Irish society. Yesterday there were 533 patients were on trolleys in hospitals across the country, with 18 of those in Tullamore Hospital.

“The ongoing crisis in hospital emergency departments undoubtedly denies many of our citizens their right to timely access to healthcare but also impacts silently on those awaiting life changing elective surgery. Another patient who recently contacted me in relation to a surgery cancellation told me how they had arranged for a family member to take time off work to care for them after the surgery, and again the surgery was cancelled leaving both the patient and their family member in limbo.

“The nurses, doctors, and all the staff in Tullamore Hospital, and hospitals across the country, work extraordinarily hard in the face of exceptional difficulties because of cutbacks in the health service. Yet the trolley crisis and cancellation of elective surgeries is making their jobs even more difficult again.

“This cannot be allowed to continue, people lives are being put at risk and hospital staff are being put under undue and unfair pressure. Regardless of the situation around forming a government, there must be cross party consensus to solve the crisis in the health service so these issues become a thing of the past.

“As TD for Offaly and North Tipperary I have been to the forefront of two protests highlighting the need for urgent action to resolve this crisis at our hospital in Tullamore to be taken. I will continue to call for action and resolution to this ongoing crisis which is greatly impacting on patients and staff at the hospital.”
