Sinn Féin support the Amnesty Ireland Repeal the 8th Campaign- Lynn Boylan MEP

6 April, 2016 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan joined Amnesty Ireland campaigners and her Sinn Féin colleagues outside Leinster House today calling for a referendum to repeal the 8th amendment.

Speaking at the demonstration Ms Boylan said:

“The time has long past for the 8th amendment to the Constitution to be repealed.

“The next government must make this a priority issue.

“Unfortunately if the two centre right parties of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil coalesce the issue will be kicked down the road.

“Opinion poll after opinion poll has shown that the majority of Irish people believe the 8th amendment to be overly restrictive and that as a nation we cannot continue to ignore this matter.

“The recent court case in the North has demonstrated how overly restrictive laws can place women in desperate and dangerous situations.

“These women are not criminals and should not be treated as such.

“Sinn Féin will continue our work campaigning on behalf of all women for a referendum to have it repealed.”
