Be part of building a new Ireland

Sinn Féin committed to gender equality - Boyle

3 May, 2016 - by Michaela Boyle

Sinn Féin's Michaela Boyle has said Sinn Féin is committed to promoting women in politics and public life.

Ms Boyle said;

"Sinn Féin has been to the fore in promoting gender equality in politics across Ireland.

"Three of our four MEPs are women; three of our ministers in the last Executive were women and I was delighted that six of our new TDs and two of our new senators are women.

"We have 15 strong female candidates standing in Thursday's Assembly elections and I hope to see more women returned to Stormont as part of a stronger Sinn Féin team.

"This stands in stark contrast to the track record of other parties, some of whom claim to be progressive, but who only pay lip service to equality.

"The SDLP in particular is not standing any female candidates in counties that lie west of the Bann while Sinn Féin has seven women candidates.

"Sinn Féin is serious about gender equality and will continue to promote women in politics."
