Ó Donnghaile welcomes UN support for Acht na Gaeilge

29 June, 2016 - by Niall Ó Donnghaile

Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed news that the United Nations have expressed their support for the introduction of an Acht na Gaeilge in the North.

A new report published by the Committee on the Rights of Economic, Social and Culture recommended the introduction of an Acht na Gaeilge to protect the language and promote cultural heritage.

“I welcome the news that the UN are committed to looking after the Irish Language and are continuing to monitor the issue of Irish here in the North.

“It is disappointing however that seven years after their last reports recommended the need for an Acht na Gaeilge that the rights of the Irish speakers and the Irish community have not been met.

“The British Government need to be held to account as they are failing in their obligations in respect of the Irish Language.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
