City centres are shared spaces capable of facilitating parades from all traditions - Maskey

2 August, 2016 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey said that a parade scheduled for this weekend from West Belfast should not be excluded from the City Centre but that the organisers should adhere to the Parades Commission Ruling.

The West Belfast MP said:

“Sinn Féin believes in a rights-based approach to dealing with contention around parades.

“Towns and city centres are shared spaces capable of facilitating parades from all perspectives and traditions.

“In that context no determination should exclude the entirety of the city centre from a route filed for and it is Sinn Féin’s view that in this instance the Parades Commission’s determination is wrong.

“However, while the rationale for the determination may be difficult to comprehend it must none the less be adhered to.”
