Archibald expresses concern over fish kill

3 August, 2016 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has expressed concern at a fish kill in the River Faughan near Claudy in Co Derry.

The East Derry MLA said:

"The cause of the fish kill has not been determined as yet but the extent of the kill is severe and over a large section of river.

"I have been in touch with NIEA this morning and been informed that the cause of the kill is suspected silage effluent.

"The Loughs Agency are conducting analysis and walking the river to narrow down and identify the source.

"I was also informed that NI Water have taken precautions to minimise any further spread of the pollution.

"This incident needs to be fully investigated, those responsible must be held accountable and brought before the courts.

"The penalties imposed for incidents such as this should be as severe as the law allows.

"At times the fines are not a sufficient deterrent and do not match the damage being done to the environment."
