Opportunity to scrap water charges for good this week – Tóibín

Sinn Féin TD for Meath West and Chairperson of the Meath Right2Water campaign, Peadar Tóibín, has sought cross party support, from Fianna Fáil in particular, in advance of Sinn Féin’s motion to scrap household water charges which will be coming before the Dáil this Wednesday.

Teachta Tóibín said:

“Irish citizens have made their voices heard on numerous occasions over the last two years with successful national and local demonstrations to abolish water charges. Irish people have also had their say at the ballot box, with an election that has returned a majority of TDs who ran on a platform of ending water charges.

“The Right2Water national demonstration in Dublin Saturday before last with many thousands participating showed that there is still huge public momentum to see the water charges scrapped. Irish people have not forgotten the promises that were made to them during election time and want to see an end to this unfair and regressive charge.

“We must now act to abolish water charges once and for all. Sinn Féin are bringing a motion to the Dáil this Wednesday to scrap water charges. This means that Fianna Fáil must finally make good their promises and support the Sinn Féin motion to abolish, not just suspend the water charges.

“This motion, co-signed by all TDs under the Right2Change movement, will give an opportunity to Fianna Fáil to put their money where their mouth is and act on the issue.

“We don’t need to wait up to a year for the recommendations of an ‘expert’ commission to be enacted – the people have already spoken. The Dáil can vote this week in favour of abolition and in doing so, deliver what people voted for in February – the abolition of water charges for good.”
