Anderson outraged after Women's Boat to Gaza intercepted

5 October, 2016 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed her outrage at reports that Israeli naval forces have intercepted the Women’s Boat to Gaza in international waters.

Ms Anderson said;

"The boat, called Zaytouna-Oliva, was intercepted while sailing to Gaza to bring essential supplies to the people of Gaza and to raise international awareness about Israel’s illegal and inhumane blockade of the Gaza strip.

"It is carrying women from around the world including nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire and American screenwriter and playwright Naomi Wallace.

"The boat was only 45 nautical miles from the shores of Gaza, in international waters, when it was stopped. Israel has unilaterally imposed a 70 mile so-called “military exclusion zone” in this area, in contravention of international law.

"Previous Freedom Flotillas have been attacked by Israel in these international waters before, including the Mavi Marmara in 2010, when Israeli commandos killed 10 people.

"In fact, Israel has just paid Turkey nearly 18 million euros in compensation for that attack, but the same Israeli navy has just blocked the Freedom Flotilla in open waters.

"The international community must act immediately to ensure the safety and well-being of the crew and passengers on board the Zaytouna-Olive, and are allowed to continue their journey to Gaza."
