Irish government has responsibility to defend citizens from Brexit agenda - O'Dowd
Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has said the Irish government has a role to play to defend Irish citizens against the British government's Brexit agenda.
Mr O'Dowd said;
"It is becoming increasingly clear to everyone that the British government's plans to drag the north out of the EU would be disastrous for Ireland, north and south.
"Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has now called on the British government and the EU to recognise the unique circumstances of the North, but it is not just up to them; the Irish government have a key role to play too.
"As co-guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement the Irish government has a legal, moral, political and diplomatic duty to represent the best interests of all Irish citizens, including those in the North.
"The fact is that the majority of the people in the North voted to remain in the EU and the British and Irish governments must recognise and respect that vote and work to secure designated special status for the north within the EU."
