Delay in GLAS payments causing stress at Christmas - Kenny

22 December, 2016 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin agriculture spokesman, Martin Kenny TD said that the failure to make GLAS payments before Christmas has caused stress and frustration to farmers the length and breadth of the country.

Deputy Kenny said:

“Along with the farm organisations, I had already called on the Minister to ensure that the GLAS payments would be processed, as promised and that people would get them before Christmas.”

“Failure to do this has caused stress and frustration to farmers the length and breadth of the country,” he said.

“My office has been receiving calls from farmers saying that they are phoning the Department’s offices and being left holding for 20 minutes before being cut off with a message telling them that the high volume of calls means their queries cannot be answered.

“People are stressed and just want to know if they can expect the payment and if so when. Does the minister not realise that at this time of the year people are under terrible strain if they have a cash flow crisis?

“Even if Minister Creed could give a definite date when processing of payments would begin, and an expected date when payments would land in bank accounts, it would relieve the stress that many families are feeling at this time when they should be enjoying peace of mind.”
