Maskey concerned after homeless deaths

31 December, 2016 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has expressed concern following reports that two homeless people died in Belfast over Christmas.

The West Belfast MP said;

"Reports that two homeless people died in Belfast over the Christmas period are very concerning.

"There is no doubt that homelessness is a real problem right across the island of Ireland.

"While the scale of the problem in Belfast has been dwarfed by the scale of the problem in Dublin and other cities as a result of the Irish government's policies which has led to families and children living on the streets, in cars and in unsuitable accommodation, any death on our streets in unacceptable.

"I acknowledge the great work carried out by those who help the homeless on a daily basis, there is an urgent need for local councils, the Housing Executive and housing associations, and others to work collectively to tackle this problem.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of these two individuals who sadly lost their lives at this time of year."
