British Secretary of State should release legacy funds immediately - Kelly

10 January, 2017 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has called on the British Secretary of State to release funds for legacy inquests immediately.

The party’s spokesperson on legacy said:

“The failure of the British government and the British secretary of state James Brokenshire to live up to its responsibilities to address outstanding issues of legacy have contributed to the current political crisis.

“It is appalling that families, some of whom have been waiting 45 years, have not had their cases heard.

“The Lord Chief Justice has stated that failure to release funds for legacy inquests could frustrate the rule of law.

“It is time both the British government and James Brokenshire stepped up and released the money so that victims and survivors can have the long-waited inquest into the deaths of their loved ones.

“They need to implement the Stormont House agreed legacy mechanisms in a human rights compliant manner."
