Peadar Tóibín TD says he fully supports 'Dream Dearg' protests in the North and South today

11 January, 2017 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Irish, Peadar Tóibí TD has said that he was supporting the protests in the north and south of the country today regarding the contempt that has been shown to the Irish language.

Speaking today Teachta Tóibín said:

“There has been a series of attacks made on the language over the last number of months, with Minister Peter Weir removing funding for Irish schools for example, and blocking the construction of new Gaelscoileanna. The latest attack was advertised directly before Christmas, which consisted of the cutting of funding for Líofa bursaries for students.

“I fully support the campaign that has been spearheaded by the ‘Dream Dearg’. It has energy, imagination and strength on its side. Because of the poor treatment that the Irish language has been receiving lately, there was a dire need for a movement such as this. I wish the protesters every success today and myself and my colleagues will be doing our utmost to ensure that these bursaries are restored.

“There is no limit to the contempt and insults the DUP mete out on the Irish language. But in the south, things are not much better. Despite the lipservice and platitudes that the government dole out, the consequences of their utter neglect of the Irish language is every bit as destructive as the poisonous policies implemented by the DUP.

“Year after year the status of Irish is being diminished by the government. It is done in a sneaking, silent fashion. Last year, the Irish language requirement for the recruitment of senior librarians was dropped. There was a 9% reduction on the funding for Irish, Gaeltachta and the islands, as well as a €6 million reduction of the capital budget.

“On top of that, there is no longer a requirement for the President of the National University of Galway to have fluent Irish. There is a protest organised by Misneach today opposing this decision.

“It is heartening to see demonstrations like these taking place today. Despite the denigration of the language, Irish people are standing up for the founding aims of the ‘Dream Dearg’ – that is equality, rights and justice.”

Lá mór agóide ó thaobh na Gaeilge de – Peadar Tóibín TD

Dúirt an Teachta Peadar Tóibín, urlabhraí Shinn Féin ar an nGaeilge, go raibh sé ag tacú leis na hagóide ó thuaidh agus ó dheas inniu maidir leis an dímheas léirithe ar an Ghaeilge ar fud oileán na hÉireann.

Ag labhairt dó inniu dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

“Ó thuaidh tá sraith ionsaithe déanta ar an dteanga le cúpla mí anuas, leis an Aire Peter Weir ag baint maoiniú ó scoileanna lán-Ghaeilge mar shampla, agus ag cur bac ar thógáil Gaelscoileanna nua. Fógraíodh an ionsaí is déanaí díreach roimh an Nollaig, ag gearradh sparánachtaí Gaeltachta Líofa do dhaltaí.

“Tacaím go mór leis an bhfeachtas atá tosaithe ag ‘An Dream Dearg’. Tá fuinneamh, samhlaíocht agus neart ina thaobh. De thoradh ar an drochíde a tugadh don Ghaeilge le déanaí, bhí géarghá leis an ngluaiseacht seo. Guím gach rath ar na hagóidí inniu agus tá mé féin agus mo chomhghleacaithe ag déanamh togha na hiarrachtaí na sparánachtaí seo a athchóiriú.

“Níl teorainn leis an tarcaisne agus an masla a thugann an DUP don Ghaeilge. Ach ó dheas, níl cúrsaí ró-iontach againn ach oiread. Cé go dtugtar béalghrá agus plámás don Ghaeilge, tá an neamart agus an fhaillí atá déanta ag an rialtas ar an nGaeilge gach pioc chomh díobhálach agus na polasaithe nimhneacha atá á gcur i bhfeidhm ó thuaidh ag an DUP.

“Bliain i ndiaidh bliana tá stádas na Gaeilge á laghdú ag an rialtas. Déantar i mbealach ciúin, slítheánta é. An bhliain seo chaite baineadh an riachtanas Gaeilge agus leabharlannaithe sinsearacha nua á fhostú. Bhí laghdú 9% ar mhaoiniú Gaeilge, Gaeltachta agus na n-oileáin agus laghdú €6 milliúin ar a maoiniú caipitil.

“Anuas ar sin, tá deireadh le riachtanas Gaeilge d’Uachtarán Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Tá agóid chéilithe eagraithe ag Misneach inniu in éadan an chinnte seo.

“Is ábhar dóchais iad na léirsithe atá ag titim amach inniu. In ainneoin an caitheamh anuas atá déanta ar an dteanga – tá daoine na hÉireann ag seasamh an fhóid ar son bun aidhmeanna an Dream Dearg – sin é cothromas, cearta agus cóir.”
