Brian Stanley TD has criticised the Governments National Postcode System - Eircode
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Climate Action and Environment Brian Stanley has criticised the Governments National Postcode System – Eircode.
Deputy Stanley stated:
“3 years on from the launch of the National Postcode system ‘Eircode’, there has been a failure of uptake of the system from the general populace.”
“This is down to numerous flaws in the design of Eircode that have not been rectified and a failure to properly advertise the system itself.”
“The arbitrary designation of codes to areas does not incite familiarity among the public to link a code with a specific area, as is the case in the UK or with the current postcodes of Dublin city.
“There is no numerical correlation between the codes of neighbouring address, rendering it useless for a delivery system”
“Currently less than 5% of mail users are using Eircode. A survey of freight and supermarket companies showed that 96% do not use Eircode.”
“The contract awarded to Capita Business Systems is not due to expire until 2023. There is a need for the state to review this system before then and examine its effectiveness, usefulness and an honest appraisal of whether or not the system is appropriate for our emergency services.”
