Future of Water Charges in Grealish’s hands – Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

28 February, 2017 - by Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Independent Galway West TD, Noel Grealish, can swing the pendulum towards scrapping water charges completely if he votes with the emerging majority against them on an Oireachtas committee, according to Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking today the Galway West – Mayo South Senator said:

‘Noel Grealish should do the right thing and vote with the ten members of the Oireachtas Committee on the Future of Domestic Water Charges who have declared that they are against the reintroduction of water charges. They include representatives from Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáíl and a number of Independents. Grealish’s vote would ensure a majority decision and could put an end to water charges.

‘Fine Gael and Labour are in favour of charges, but the emerging majority maintain that there is no evidence of widespread wastage of water from domestic users. They maintain it would also be counter-productive to reintroduce domestic water charges as it would be more expensive to administer them than the revenue collected.

‘The group including Sinn Féin also favour putting the money into fixing the leaking infrastructure, introducing parity of charges for people on group water schemes and refunding of monies to those who have already paid their water bills.

‘Noel Grealish needs to remember the huge numbers of people from Galway who marched against the imposition of water charges. He must respect the fact that Irish citizens elected a majority of TD’s who opposed water charges and he should support the efforts to dump the water charges once and for all when the committee votes in them this week.

Todhchaí na dTáillí Uisce i lámha Grealish – Ó Clochartaigh

Is féidir leis an Teachta Dála Neamhspleách as Gaillimh Thiar, Noel Grealish cuidiú le táillí uisce a chaitheamh i dtraipisí ar fad má thacaíonn sé leis an móramh atá ag teacht chun cinn ag Comhchoiste Oireachtais atá ina gcoinne, dar le Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó inniu, deir Seanadóir Gaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

‘Caithfidh Noel Grealish an rud ceart a dhéanamh agus vótáíl leis an deichniúr ball den Chomhchoiste Oireachtais ar Thodhchaí na dTáilli Uisce Tí atá i ndiaidh léiriú go poiblí go bhfuil siad i gcoinne táillí uisce a thabhairt isteach in athuair. Áirítear orthu sin, ionadaithe ó Shinn Féín, Fianna Fáil agus roinnt neamhspleáigh. Chinnteodh vóta Grealish go mbeadh móramh ann chun deireadh a chur le táillí uisce.

‘Tá Fine Gael agus an Lucht Oibre ar son táillí uisce, ach dar leis an móramh atá ag teacht chun cinn níl aon fhianaise ann go bhfuil uisce dhá chur amú go forleathan ó úsáideoiríi tí. Bheadh sé gan chiall dar leo freisin, mar go gcosnódh riaradh na dtáillí níos mó ná an cháin a thabharfaí isteach.

‘Tá an grúpa, a bhfuil Sinn Féin lárnach iontu, ar son breis infheistíochta san infreastruchtúr fabhtach, cothromas a thabhairt isteach maidir le taillí daoine atá I ngrúpscéimeanna uisce agus aisíocaíocht dóibh siúd a d-íoc na billí uisce roimhe seo.

‘Ní mór do Noel Grealish smaoineamh ar líon na ndaoine as Gaillimh a bhí ag máirseáil i gcoinne na dtáiíllí uisce a bheith dhá chur i bhfeidhm. Caithfidh sé omós a thabhairt do mhianta na saoránaigh a thogh tromlach do Theachtaí chun na Dála a bhí i gcoinne táillí uisce agus ba chóir dó tacú leis na h-iarrachtaí chun na táillí uisce a chaitheamh sna fataí lofa ar deire thiar thall nuair a chaitheann an choiste vóta an tseachtain seo’.
