Brokenshire deluded if he thinks he speaks for the north - O'Dowd

1 March, 2017 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin's John O'Dowd has said James Brokenshire is deluded if he thinks he speaks for the people of the north on Brexit.

John O'Dowd said:

"It is frankly ridiculous for British secretary of state James Brokenshire to claim he will represent the interests of the people of the north in the Brexit negotiations.

"He has no mandate in the North and does not speak for people here. He is deluded if he thinks he does.

"His government is pursuing a reckless and senseless Brexit agenda which is clearly at odds with the democratic views of the people of the North.

"The majority of people here voted to remain in Europe and their mandate is their voice, not that of James Brokenshire.

"Sinn Féin has put forward a case for designated special status for the north within the EU and we have been building support for that across Europe and just last week in the Dáil.

"There is now an onus on the Irish government to step up, act on that vote and represent the best interests of all Irish citizens."
