McDonald calls for reimbursement of Diabetes monitoring costs
Sinn Féin Dublin Central TD Mary Lou McDonald has called on Minister for Health Simon Harris to ensure that a decision to provide reimbursement of the FreeStyle Libre System is taken without any further delay. The FibreStyle Libre System is a pioneering method of monitoring and controlling diabetes.
Teachta McDonald said:
“It is clear from speaking to many people who use this system that it has become a vital element in controlling and monitoring their Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
“The FreeStyle Libre System is allowing children and adults who previously had to finger prick test every two hours to now have a restful night’s sleep affording them greater quality of life.
“However, while an application to reimburse users currently rests with the HSE, many families are finding it difficult to afford. I’m therefore calling on the Minister to work with the HSE to detail a timeline of when a decision will be made and if it can be expedited so that families are given certainty for their future.”
