Irish Government must get real following Article 50 announcement – Gerry Adams TD
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, following the announcement that the British Government plan to trigger Article 50 on the 29th March, has warned about their approach and the risks posed to Ireland.
He said the Taoiseach must “stand up for our national interests across the island, at European level, to secure special designated status for the north within the EU.”
Deputy Adams said:
“The British Government has now announced that it will trigger Article 50 on Wednesday, 29th March and persist with its plan to impose Brexit on Ireland, regardless of the views of the people of Ireland, north and south.
“The Taoiseach has previously expressed impatience over the lack of clarity from Britain on Brexit. He now knows the date on which Article 50 will be triggered. The clock is ticking, so he needs to act accordingly and stand up for our national interests across the island, at European level, to secure special designated status for the north within the EU.
“That is the consensus of the majority of parties north and south.
“If the British Government succeeds in its plans, it will drive part of Ireland out of the European Union. That is not acceptable.
“Citizens in the north voted to remain in the referendum vote, and a majority of the MLAs and parties returned in the Assembly election also want the north to remain within the EU.
“It is the only logical way to avoid a hard economic border, job losses and business closures.”
