Government must demand Ibrahim Halawa's transfer to regular hospital – Boylan

30 March, 2017 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has called on the Government to make a formal application to its Egyptian counterpart to have Irish prisoner Ibrahim Halawa moved to a private hospital in Cairo.

MEP Boylan said:

“Today, we received news that the Egyptian Interior Minister, Magdy Abdel Ghaffar, will not object to a request to move Egyptian prisoner Ahmed el Khatib to a private hospital. Ahmed el Khatib is currently in the same prison hospital as Ibrahim Halawa.

“The Irish Government must now seize this opportunity to request a similar move for Ibrahim.

“We know that Ibrahim’s physical health is deteriorating, but we also have huge concerns for his mental health. Only this week, he told his sister how prison wardens are threatening to put him in with contagious and dying patients.

“While ultimately, we are arguing for the Irish Government to take clear decisive legal action against Egypt in the case of Ibrahim Halawa, the very least they could do in the interim is to make a formal request to have Ibrahim moved to a private hospital.”
