The exorbitant cost of car insurance is one of the main barriers facing emigrants trying to return home to Ireland and the government needs to call the sector to task to get them to play fair, according to Sinn Féin spokesperson for the Diaspora, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking from the Global Civic Forum in Dublin Castle today, the Galway West – South Mayo Senator says:

“A new research report being launched here by Crosscare entitled ‘Home for Good’ confirms what we were hearing anecdotally that returning emigrants are being fleeced by insurance companies charging what some called ‘crippling’ and ‘criminally expensive’ insurance fees, not recognising clean driving records or no claims bonuses.

“On top of this the cost of having to reapply for an Irish driving licence, the ensuing cost of lessons and high car tax were also cited as deterrents to our Irish abroad wishing to come home to stay.

“It is quite clear that the government needs to tackle the insurance companies in this regard and also do something within the government departments with responsibility for these issues rather than merely offering tea and sympathy to Irish emigrants.

“The majority of these insurance companies operate in international spheres and are in some cases insuring the same people in whichever jurisdiction they are living at present, so to think that they could not recognise their previous driving histories is unacceptable and needs to change.

“The government must play its part also in developing bilateral agreements that will ensure that these highly profitable companies take these issues on board and act fairly.

“The government spends a lot of time talking about the things they cannot change, such as the volatile political landscape, but this is something they can have a positive impact on for our returning citizens and they need to be a lot more proactive in this regard.”

Comhlachtaí árachais ag ‘tiomáint’ eisimircigh ón mbaile – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá’n costas ró-ard árachais gluaisteáin ar cheann de na constaicí is mó atá roimh eisimircigh agus iad ag iarraidh filleadh abhaile agus caithfidh an Rialtas brú a chur ar an earnáil chun go gcaithfidh siad ar bhealach níos cothroime le daoine, dar le h-urlabhraí Diaspóra Shinn Féin, an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó ón bhFóram Domhanda Saoránach i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath inniu, deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

“Tá taighde nua seolta anseo ag an eagraíocht Crosscare darb ainm ‘Home for Good’, a dheimhníonn an rud a bhí muid ag cloisteáil ó dhaoine, sé sin go bhfuil an barr dhá bhaint ag comhlachtaí árachais d’eisimircigh, táillí dhá n-éilimh uathu atá dhá ‘craplú’ agus gur ‘coir costais’ atá iontu agus gan iad ag aithint cleachtais glana tiomána ná bónais cheal éilimh na dtiománaithe.

“Chomh maith leis seo, tá an dualgas atá ann cur isteach ar cheadúnas tiomána Éireannach, costas na gceachtanna a théann leis sin agus an costas ard cáin bóthair, dhá lua mar chonstaicí d’Éireannaigh thar lear a bheadh ag iarraidh teacht abhaile freisin.

“Tá sé rí-shoiléir go gcaithfidh an Rialtas dúshlán na gcomhlachtaí árachais a thógáil ar an ábhar seo agus dul i bhfeidhm ar na ranna Rialtais atá ag plé leis na ceisteanna seo, seachas a bheith ag ofráil tae agus comhbhrón d’eisimircigh Éireannacha faoi.

“Tá formhór na gcomhlachtaí árachais seo ag feidhmiú in aeráid ilnáisiúnta agus i gcásanna áirithe is iad a thugann árachas do na daoine seo i cibé cén dlínse ina bhfuil siad ag cónaí cheana féin. Mar sin níl sé ceart ná cóir nach mbeadh siad sásta an stair tiomána atá acu a aithint agus caithfidh sin athrú.

“Caithfidh an Rialtas a gcion féin a dhéanamh chomh maith ó thaobh comhaontaithe déthaobhacha a fhorbairt a chinnteoidh go gcaithfidh na comhlachtaí mór-bhrabach seo na cúinsí seo a thógáil san áireamh agus feidhmiú dá réir.

“Caitheann an Rialtas cuid mhaith ama ag caint faoi na nithe atá ag déanamh tinnis d’eisimircigh nach féidir leo tionchar a imirt orthu, ar nós an tírdhreach corraitheach pholaitiúil, ach seo rud gur féidir leo athrú ar son eisimircigh atá ag filleadh agus caithfidh siad a bheith i bhfad níos gníomhaí ina leith seo.”
