Government needs to act as County Louth sees Highest Percentage Increase in Rents in State – Munster
Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster has hit out at government inaction over spiralling rental costs in private accommodation. Deputy Munster has raised this issue with the Taoiseach on several occasions following reports from Daft.ie that rents in Louth have seen the largest percentage increase in rents across the state.
Rents in Louth have increased by more than 60% since 2012 and has risen again by a further 4.3% in the first quarter of this year.
The Sinn Fein TD said:
“The Government’s indifference and lack of action is causing financial misery and uncertainty and it is compounding the homeless and housing crisis even further in Louth.
“The Government, to date, has repeatedly refused to include County Louth in the Rent Pressure Zone, despite the fact that this move would have no financial implications for the Government and have sat back and allowed rental costs to spiral out of control throughout County Louth and indeed many parts of the state.
“Given the latest Daft.ie report, the Government and the Minister need to state definitively what immediate steps they intend to take to resolve this crisis as it has reached an all-time high.”
