Has Varadkar promised Infrastructural Projects to help Leadership Bid – Tóibín
Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Regional and Rural Development Peadar Tóibín has called on Minister Leo Varadkar to clarify if infrastructural investment projects were being promised to Fine TDs in return for support in his leadership bid.
It follows Fine Gael TD for Sligo-Leitrim Tony McLoughlin who stated on today’s RTÉ News at One that he has had a commitment from Leo Varadkar for investment to upgrade the N4 road from Dublin to Sligo and this was a significant part of his decision to support Leo in his leadership bid.
The Meath West TD said:
“The N4 is in significant need of upgrading. Sinn Féin have been to the fore in putting capital investment projects such as this to the fore. We have also pushed the government hard on the need to increase the level of capital spend in this state. This government’s capital spend is the 2nd lowest in the EU even while they have provided tax breaks to those on high incomes.
“However, it would be absolutely scandalous if individual infrastructural projects were to be decided on the basis of an internal Fine Gael leadership battle. Infrastructure projects should be decided on the basis of cost-benefit analysis and balanced spatial development. The future of our regions should not be a stepping stone on the greasy poll of Fine Gael’s leadership race.”
