Business and economic community urged to support call for designated special status – O’Dowd
John O’Dowd has welcomed the willingness of business and economic agencies to engage with the party on the issue of Brexit.
The Sinn Féin candidate for Upper Bann was speaking ahead of a meeting with representatives of the business community and economic organisations today.
John O’Dowd said:
“We will be meeting with key players and organisations from across the north and will be seeking the views of these organisations on the implications of Brexit for the local economy and businesses.
“We will be presenting the case of Designated Special Status for the north to these organisations and seeking their support.
“There is no good outcome from Brexit. There is an urgent need and indeed an opportunity for new thinking. A special status relationship outside of the EU would do little to deal with the massive political, social and economic challenges thrown up by Brexit.
“The EU has shown itself to be flexible in dealing with different forms of integration and different forms of relationships for member states and non-member states.
“Designated Special Status would preserve access to the Single Market and Customs Union and ensure that we retain the Common Travel Area and maintain access to all EU funding streams. It would protect our economy and our people.”
