Delays in assessments and statements unacceptable - Boyle

3 July, 2017 - by Michaela Boyle

Speaking in Advance of the All-Party Group meeting on Learning Disability, which is to consider the Audit Officer report on Special Educational Needs Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has said that the Education Authority must act immediately to reduce the amount of time parents and children are waiting for statements to be issued.

 The West Tyrone MLA said:

"The Audit Office Report on Special Educational Needs has highlighted that 79 per cent of statements of special educational needs are completed outside of the 26-week statutory limit.

“Delays in assessments and statements are unacceptable.  Early intervention makes a real difference to life chances

“The more quickly a child’s particular needs are identified and appropriate support put in place, the more responsive the child is likely to be.

“Yet we have parents and children waiting for more than six and half months for a statement to be completed.

"The EA must now take immediate action to reduce waiting times. In the longer term the statutory time limit should be reduced."
