Affordable childcare and tackling child poverty are key priorities for new Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs - Mitchell
Sinn Féin TD Denise Mitchell says she is looking forward to continuing the positive work of her colleagues Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD and Kathleen Funchion TD as she takes up the role of Spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs, as part of the Sinn Féin Dáil reshuffle.
The Dublin Bay North TD said the provision of affordable childcare would be a key issue for her:
“We want to see high-quality, universal childcare available throughout this state. Affordable, high-quality childcare is the key to the development of our youngest children and it hugely benefits in helping parents, especially women, to access the workforce.
“For too long we have also seen highly-qualified workers in this sector dealing with very low-pay and poor working conditions. This has to change. And I will be a strong voice in support of these workers.
“The State of the Nation’s Children Report published in March showed that 11% of our children are living in consistent poverty. This is something that we in Sinn Féin want to address. Children in this State should have the best possible start in life.
"We want to see increased emphasis and attention from this Government on tackling the child poverty that has been prevalent in Irish society for far too long.
Commenting on other aspects of the role which range from dealing with adoption rights to funding for youth services and to mother and baby homes, Deputy Mitchell said:
“I feel that by continuing our constructive yet robust engagement with the Government in these areas, we can make a real and positive difference to the lives of our youngest citizens.”
