Disappointment at Unionist councillors opposition to FanZone

14 July, 2017 - by Matt Garrett

Sinn Féin Belfast City Councillor Matt Garret has said he is disappointed with the approach taken by unionists councillors in opposing the positive Fan Zone established by Féile an Phobail.

Speaking after Féile an Phobail stated that they will withdraw the funding application as they will not be used as a political football Cllr Garrett said:

“I am extremely disappointed at unionists councillors aimed to turn the Fanzone at the Devenish complex into a political football.

“I commend the hard work of Féile and others who were involved in bringing this initiative to fruition. It was aimed at providing a positive, family orientated, focal point for both local and travelling fans to watch the match, keeping people who may not be familiar with Belfast away from sensitive interfaces.

“Unfortunately due to the lack of broad mindedness by some Féile an Phobail have taken the decision to withdraw its application for funding for the FanZone.

“There is of course no lack of irony given the fact that only last week we couldn’t find a unionist councillor to speak publicly about an injunction taken by Belfast City Council in order to protect damage to it’s property through the burning of bonfires and the associated costs but only days later unionists councillors are falling over themselves to criticise and close down a positive initiative aimed at diffusing tensions and ensuring that this football match passes peacefully.”
