Third Level Investigator ‘welcome move’ – Cullinane
Sinn Féin member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane TD today welcomed the announcement of new powers to appoint investigators to look into Irish universities.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The Public Accounts Committee report into third level institutions made for some sobering reading.
“It appeared from the hearings that some accounting officers were running colleges as if it was the Wild West.
“I have no difficulty with academic independence, but I certainly do not believe there should be any free pass for any organisation when it comes to spending taxpayers’ money,
“Our report noted that a failure to provide up-to-date accounts is prevalent across much of the third-level sector, as well as a lack of transparency and accountability in relation to tens of millions of euro held in foundations and trusts by some third-level institutions.
“This is unacceptable.
“The less than forthright answers from accounting officers, and the scale of public funding at issue, means that a proper investigate procedure needs to be in place.
“The announcement of such a procedure is a welcome move, and will go some way to bringing much-needed oversight to one of our most vital social and economic sectors.”
