Rising back to school costs causing major concern among parents – Funchion

25 July, 2017 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

A survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions has revealed that parents are feeling more pressure to cover rising back to school costs and feel it will impact other areas within the household.

The survey found that 25% of families feel back-to-school costs will have a negative impact on their household bill, with a further 29% getting into debt to cover the costs.

Speaking today, Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Kathleen Funchion TD said;

“Parents are facing into some of the most expensive months of the year with back to school costs coming up fast. The scrambling and saving begins in the hope of having the money to send children back to school this September without having to cut basic school supplies.

“72% of parents with school-going children feel the back-to-school costs will be a financial burden.

“The average back to school cost for a single primary school child is €1,048 and €1,401 for a child in secondary school.

“Regressive cuts to supports for low and middle-income families have left many feeling exposed and finding themselves literally unable to put food on the table.

“Education Minister Richard Bruton must push his and all other relevant departments to scale back these ever-increasing costs on our most hard-pressed citizens.

“He also needs to begin supporting parents suffering with these costs to curtail any knock-on effect that leads to children being impoverished.

“Sinn Féin supports the reduction of back to school costs by increasing the School Books Grant by 30%. In Government, we will introduce legislation for schools to have generic school uniform policies to reduce back-to-school costs for families.

“We will also increase the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance by €50 to help relieve some of the pressure felt by families with these costs."
