Garda Authority criticism of An Garda Síochána must be taken seriously by government - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

29 July, 2017 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Fein Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has said criticism from the Garda Authority over the handling of financial irregularities at Templemore college and the investigation into false breath tests is further evidence showing Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan’s position is untenable.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said Fianna Fáil’s position on the issue is absurd and that they have no credibility on the issue.

Speaking this afternoon Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

“The criticism from the Garda Authority of An Garda Síochána’s handling of financial irregularities at Templemore college and the investigation of false breath tests must be taken extremely seriously by government.

“It shows once again that An Garda Síochána is incapable of dealing appropriately with serious issues that are dogging the force.  And there are a considerable amount of those issues at this stage.

“The Gardaí cannot dismiss these criticisms.  The policing authority is a statutory body responsible for oversight of An Garda Síochána.  It is clear that the frustrations at the failures of the Gardaí cannot be taken lightly.

“It is further evidence, if it was needed, that Nóirín O’Sullivan’s position as Garda Commissioner is untenable.

“Fianna Fáil’s position on this matter is absurd.  They cannot express confidence in the commissioner but refuse to do anything about it.  They have no credibility on this matter.”
