More should be done to ease demand on cancer services - Sheehan
Speaking after a report was published into cancer care in the north of Ireland highlighting services here lag behind those in Britain, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Health MLA Pat Sheehan said:
"It is clear from this report that cancer services, like many other services, are under considerable pressure. Demand for cancer services is set to increase with our growing aging population so it is important that we have adequate plans in place to address these challenges.
"I recognise that cancer survival rates are better now than they have ever been. This is due to improved treatments and the commitment and dedication of Health and Social Care staff who deliver vital care to cancer patients.
"But more needs to be done to tackle excessive waiting times and meet waiting time targets. This is important if we are to ensure cancer patients get the best treatment possible.
"Importantly this recent report is further evidence that transformation of our health system is needed if we are to deal with the many challenges it faces."
