Sinn Féin committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace - Fearon

10 August, 2017 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon said the rights of women on maternity leave should be protected.

The party’s spokesperson on equality was speaking after a woman who lost her job while on maternity leave accepted a £9,000 settlement after taking a sex discrimination case against her ex-employer.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said:

“Any discrimination against pregnant women is unacceptable and their career opportunities should not be negatively affected by having a baby.

“Every year 27 percent of all complaints made to the Equality Commission are connected to sex discrimination.

“Twenty percent of these complaints are related to discrimination because of pregnancy and maternity.

“This is not acceptable 40 years after the introduction of legislation in the North to provide protection against sex discrimination in the work place.

“Sinn Féin is committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

“We remain committed to equal rights for all.”
