Government's 'toothless approach' to housing and homeless crisis is not working – Denise Mitchell TD

11 August, 2017 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs, Denise Mitchell TD, has described as 'shameful and upsetting' figures from the Central Statistics Office which show 765 children under the age of four are homeless in the State.

Speaking today Teachta Mitchell said;

“These figures, which show 1,846 children are homeless in this State, are shocking and a shameful indictment of the toothless approach by this Government to tackling the housing and homeless crisis.

“The numbers of families becoming homeless is far exceeding the number who are moving out of homelessness. This means the housing and homelessness crisis is getting worse day-by-day and the Government simply is not doing enough to provide social and affordable housing.

“No child in this State should have to grow-up homeless. We need to see the Government introducing effective rent-controls as well as working with local authorities to build social and affordable housing and ensuring quick turn-arounds to bring vacant homes back into use.”
