Safety of care home residents must be the priority – Colm Gildernew
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has said the immediate and long-term care and safeguards for residents of the Ashbrooke Care Home in Enniskillen and their families must always be our priority.
Colm Gildernew was speaking after he has been contacted by a number of families concerned about loved ones in the care home.
Colm Gildernew said:
“Sinn Féin offices in Fermanagh and Dungannon have been contacted by a number of concerned families, with loved ones in Ashbrooke care home, Enniskillen, operated by Runwood Homes.
“This follows an unannounced visit to the home last week by the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA).
“We know there have multiple inspections within the past year, with a number of recommendations and requirements being made.
“The RQIA has said that it found ‘systemic care failings and concerns in relation to the management of the home’ and that ‘there was a serious risk to the life, health and wellbeing of all those living at Ashbrooke Care Home’.
“Sinn Féin’s primary concern is the safety and welfare for the residents and their families.
“We are working with them to clarify the situation.
“We have sought clarification from RQIA and the Western Trust as to how they are going to respond to the urgent situation within the private care home.
“There will now be a huge challenge to make the appropriate alternative care arrangements for the residents.
“The decision to close and make an enforcement decision doesn’t come lightly from the regulator, RQIA and the immediate and long term care and safeguards for the residents and their families must always our priority.”
