Archibald welcomes Times Higher Education rankings

7 September, 2017 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has welcomed the Times Higher Education rankings for Queens University and Ulster University which have both universities maintaining their positions.

The party's Further and Higher Education spokesperson said, "Queens University and Ulster University must be congratulated for maintaining their positions in the world rankings.

"The staff of both universities must be commended for their efforts which contributed to the rankings.

"At a time when universities have faced reduced funding and are dealing with the challenges of Brexit, it is welcome news that both continue to deliver recognised high quality education.

"Given the weighting to the ranking of research and international impact, there is concern that the implications of Brexit in terms of access to research funding and in attracting overseas staff and students, will result in universities dropping down the ranking list.

"Indeed the full impact and consequences of Brexit on higher education cannot be underestimated and are yet to fully analysed. Universities in the north will be particularly impacted given the proximity to competitor institutions in the south which enjoy the full benefits of EU membership.

"The best way to protect institutions in the north is to secure designated special status for the north in the EU."
