Plans for greater transparency on university senior staff salaries welcome - Archibald
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has welcomed the announcement of plans to tackle the spiralling rates of pay for senior university staff.
The party's Further and Higher Education spokesperson said:
"Requiring universities to publish and justify the salaries they pay to senior staff is a step towards the openness and transparancy we need to see.
"The manner in which universities are financed through public funding and student fees demands public accountability from institutions on how those finances are managed.
"A more transparent approach, which also looks for justification of higher salaries, will level the paying field for institutions and is a move towards greater confidence on how funding is used by institutions."
While management undoubtedly perform an important and challenging role in their institutions, the salaries and perks that are afforded by some instutions to those in high level positions cannot be justified. Indeed, they are in stark contrast to unstable, short-term contracts of some staff, particularly those in early career stages, and with the debt acquired by the many students availing of the education provided by those institutions."
