10 September, 2017 - by Sinéad Ennis

Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis has contacted authorities regarding constituents stranded on St Maarten because of Hurricane Irma.

The South Down MLA said:"I was contacted by constituents who were worried about family members stranded on St Maarten due to Hurricane Irma

"I am aware that many are trying to get their families home but due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, authorities are advising those affected to stay safe.

"I have been in touch with the authorities who have confirmed that there has been widespread damage, flooding and missing people on the island.

"They are working closely with embassies to help families making enquiries regarding their relatives on the island.

"At present there is no movement in or out of the island.

"I have been advised that two Dutch navy ships have landed to the island delivering military personnel and resources, and they are in process of trying to set up an air bridge to get additional resources into the area.

"Anyone looking for advise or information can contact Crisis line telephones on + 590596393600 or 0207008000."
